The Votive Table of Place Memories
An imagined series of collective memories lost in the Los Angeles fires
We are still living in the same month in which whole neighborhoods vanished in the Los Angeles fire storms, yet the ferocious speed of the news cycle has rendered our proximity to the tragedy falsely removed. I made some drawings imagining peoples memories of lost places as the votive candles you see in a beautiful Catholic church. I permit myself here to do the same for the place memories of all the citizens of the great City of Los Angeles who still ache, still feel a hollowness in missing what was. From the mundane to the sacred, these place memories are how we humans seem to mark time. It’s unspeakably disorienting when they are gone. This is my small act of solidarity with you, Los Angeles.
