As a Northern California, I have always regarded agaves with uneasiness and maybe even a little dislike. They do grow here, but somehow they seem out of place. You've made me look at them in a new, fond way! My aunt in Marin has one that has been dormant for 50 years but has just started to push up its flower. She keeps sending us photos. It's pretty cool!
I agree, fellow NorCal native here. I love this story of an agave’s second act! I didn’t know they could go dormant. To me they always feel very (southern) Italian.
